Dana Point Rehab Campus for Drug & Alcohol Treatment
At Dana Point Rehab Campus, we understand that drug and alcohol addictions are not driven by a singular issue or disorder. Instead, multiple problems can compile or conflict with one another, driving someone to alcoholism or drug addiction that destroys other aspects of their life. With this in knowledge in center focus, we have designed our specialized program in a way that addresses all aspects of human nature that contribute to alcoholism and drug addiction in order to reach lifelong sobriety
To name only a few of the factors we consider when developing a rehabilitation program:
- Developmental level
- Spirituality
- Cognitive abilities
- Learning disorders, if any
- Personality traits
- Personal values and their meaning
Furthermore, our rehabilitation team includes MDs with specializations in psychiatry. Under their careful attention, we can integrate mental health stabilization, sleep regulation, and medical assisted addiction treatments (MAT) into our program, alongside nutrition control, exercise, and more holistic approaches from other specialists.
Facing America’s Addiction Crisis Head-On
According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, a 2013 survey revealed that at least 16% of all Americans aged 12 or older had some form of drug, alcohol, or nicotine addiction. Only an estimated 10% of those people ever seek treatment, and only an assumedly small margin of that small percent of people receive effective treatment. In other words, approximately 15% of the population requires addiction treatment and care but never receive it properly.
Due to the lack of a solid foundation of addiction treatment research, our team at Dana Point Rehab Campus has rooted our treatments in therapies that can provide clear research and learning opportunities for all of those involved. It is our hope to stand up to the addiction crisis gripping the country through carefully constructed and comprehensive programs, each tailored to the individual.
Our MDs, psychologists, and other specialists get a better understanding of a resident’s addiction through:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Motivation interviewing
- Behavioral therapy
- Pharmaceutical treatment
With the research we are actively conducting coupled with the knowledge gained from other professionals and preexisting studies, we are narrowing in on the very many causes of drug and alcohol addiction. Anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, insomnia, poor communication and social skills, spiritual confusion, family problems, and much more have all been linked to addictive traits thanks to continual research.
Using Best Psychology Practices & Futureproofing Sobriety
At Dana Point Rehab Campus, part of the California Rehab Campus family, we have a program specially designed by psychologists. Using evidence-based behavioral treatments in conjunction with other tried-and-true methods like 12-step recovery, we give our residents the ability to understand their own addiction on a psychological level, so that they may challenge and overcome it.
This methodology goes beyond treatment, though, as we can also apply it to discharge planning. After all, what happens in a person’s life after they leave a rehabilitation center can be more influential than anything that happens during rehab. We want to ensure that everyone who enters our halls and leaves again will be psychologically, physically, and emotionally ready for whatever triggers the world may throw at them next.
Each resident is shown that they are not just an “addict” in a rough spot. No, they are shown that they are a person whose life has meaning. By instilling confidence and a sense of purpose in each person who goes through our supportive program, we hope to pave for them a future path they want to follow with future goals they want to achieve. We are extending their expectations beyond just “get sober” and instead helping people want to “do more,” which can only be done while maintaining sobriety.
Learning About Sobriety & Ourselves the Right Way
Learning sciences estimates that only 20% of what we learn is actually stored in active memory that we can recall at will. When what we learn is meant to prevent us from relapsing into drug or alcohol addiction again, it is clear there is a problematic disconnect between typical teaching-learning methods and addiction rehabilitation. At Dana Point Rehab Campus, our program integrates innovative and clever learning methods to help our residents get a clearer upfront understanding of what they need to know, as well as help them actually remember what they have learned years later.
Unique approaches we take to addiction education and learning include:
- Providing residents written documentation of all therapy sessions.
- Assigning homework to encourage taking the subject matter to heart.
- Daily learning retention groups to build memorization.
- Themed days, organized by principle or lesson.
- Thought packets to inspire critical thinking and engagement.
The more a resident can remember the lessons of both addiction therapy and sobriety, the more likely they will be able to resist temptations and triggers in the future. We want them to always remember what they can gain through sobriety fueled by meaningful purpose, and, in a way, what can be lost and potentially never retrieved due to addiction.
Key Topics & Skill Sets of Focus in Our Program
Dana Point Rehab Campus believes in empowering our residents through distinctive learning opportunities, the realization of behavioral influences and control, the establishment of future purpose and meaning, and an omnidirectional approach to psychological, emotional, and biological issues that contribute to addiction. How we put these approaches into action is also unique to our program and our addiction rehabilitation center.
Topics and skill sets of focus in our program include:
- CBT groups: To monitor and control your own thoughts, we enroll you in cognitive behavioral therapy groups. It is common among alcohol and drug addicts to have honed a “screw it” attitude about just about everything, which not only enabled but also worsens their addiction through destructive thoughts and behaviors. In a CBT group, you can learn to counteract rash “screw it” thoughts with conscious, fact-based thoughts and decisions. In effect, controlling your thoughts and how they form is the key to controlling your life.
- Skills training: The feeling of being ignored or not heard by others is devastating, and a common contributing factor to addiction. We help you craft your communication skills so you can be heard when you tell others what you want. The mere act of knowing your voice has meaning is uplifting.
- Exercise and leisure skills: It is said that idle hands make fretful minds. This is absolutely true, and so, a key component of addiction treatment is finding anything else to do other than using drugs or alcohol. We go beyond just keeping you engaged in activities, though, as a distraction can only work for so long. Instead, we focus on helping you entangle certain activities with specific emotional feedback. A big part of creating your own new mental pathways to a sense of fulfillment is being in control of what you are doing, and so we encourage all residents to schedule their own time for 12-hours a day.
- Occupational and educational resources: Along the same vein as the dangers of idle hands, there is a downside to being an idle person. We all feel better when we are productive, active, and progressing. For most people, employment or education helps fulfil this basic want to be busy. We are here to assist you in finding a type of work or education that meets your psychological – and financial – needs.
- Goal setting and values: The most basic action-and-reward behavior will trigger a dopamine high in any human, and it is part of the dangerous foundation on which drug and alcohol addictions are built. We help you use this primitive neurobiological response to your advantage by setting personal goals that you genuinely value and that you can actually attain. When you reach a positive goal, you get the same dopamine rush without any self-destructive behaviors.
- Mindfulness meditation: Teaching mindfulness means learning how to intentionally act after thinking about all likely outcomes here at Dana Point Rehab Campus. Everything that we do requires mindfulness if we want to get the most value from it. Of course, with mindfulness and self-awareness, using drugs and alcohol becomes far less likely as we recognize these substances are designed to and can only damage us physically, mentally, and emotionally.
- Daily learning retention group: A crucial component to our program is a resident’s daily learning retention group, which asks a simple question: “What did you learn today?” Simply taking the time to look back on the day and write down lessons and new information helps us fully absorb knowledge and stay focused on our goals, meaning, and purpose.
